First Day Hikes and Possum Plunge
January 1, 2025 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Ring in the New Year with a guided hike to the summit of our Longhorn Trail. Then cool off with the Possum Plunge. This refreshing dip into the cold waters of Possum Kingdom Lake is sure to sharpen the senses for 2025! Then, finish off the day with a final hike up the Chapparal trail.
The guided hike to the Summit of the Longhorn Trail begins at 10:00 A.M. and lasts about two hours. Meet at the primitive parking area. Make sure to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes and bring plenty of drinking water. Each hiker will be given a First Day Hike sticker.
The Possum Plunge will take place at the swim beach at noon immediately after the First Day Hike. Be sure to bring a towel and change of clothes as the lake will be very chilly! We will have a roaring campfire and hot coffee, tea, and cocoa available for both plungers and onlookers. All plungers will be honored with a one-of-a-kind medallion crafted by the Possum Kingdom State Park rangers.
Meet at the Lakeview Campsite Restrooms at 2:00 for the final hike. This hike will follow the Chapparal Trail and take about 1 hour to complete. Closed-toed shoes and drinking water are required. Each hiker will be given a First Day Hike sticker.
