Penitentiary Hollow Wild Walk

March 16 @ 10:00 am 1:00 pm

State Park entry fee is $7.00 per person unless you have a park pass. Meet at the parking lot to Penitentiary Hollow. We will be exploring areas of Penitentiary Hollow that are seldom visited by other people. More remote and somewhat different geological formations than the rest of Penitentiary Hollow, where 20 – 40-foot sandstone conglomerate outcrops exist. Numerous nooks and crannies, small caves, steep outcroppings, and unique micro habitats are found here that support rare plant species.

Some species we might encounter are Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron), Woolly Lipfern (Myriopteris tomentosa), Resurrection Fern (Pleopeltis michauxiana), Alabama Lipfern (Myriopteris alabamensis) and Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata). There are also numerous lichens and mosses growing on the rock outcroppings.
